My freelance business
Brouer Designs is my freelance business in Denmark, which I run on my own. I handle everything independently – client communication, project management, design work, invoicing and finances.
How it started
I built, designed and launched my website in 4 weeks – something I’d dreamed of doing for 10 years. Within 10 days of launch, I landed my first two clients: one international and one in Denmark.
Finding the right balance
Balancing full-time work with freelancing requires clarity and prioritisation. My first client was a large ongoing project, including a full website redesign and development, plus additional design tasks afterwards. To avoid burnout and maintain quality, I combined him with smaller one-off projects instead of taking on another heavy one. That approach helped me keep my standards high.
What I learned
Personally, I learned that progress matters more than perfection. Starting, testing and adjusting as I go keeps me moving forward.
Professionally, I learned that I’m far more than “just” a designer: I can manage my own workflows, handle budgets, communicate clearly with clients, stay organised – and still deliver strong design outcomes.
Most importantly, freelancing deepened my understanding of design: it’s not about right or wrong, but about what best serves the purpose in the moment.
Freelance is part of my experience - not my end goal
Freelance has been an incredible learning experience and helped me grow as a designer and professional. But it's not a stepping stone to going fully independent. My longterm goal is to be a part of a team, contributing consistently and collaborating.
